How to Create the Perfect Meal:
Check out this amazing infographic from Precision Nutrition for the basics on how to put together a perfect meal. If you are lost when it comes to nutrition, before figuring out how much to eat, it's incredibly important to learn how to eat.
Try to include a source of protein (vegetarian protein works too!), a vegetable (or fruit), a smart carbohydrate, and a healthy fat. Every.Time.You.Eat. Yes, even when you're trying to "snack".
The exact amounts of each of these components will vary depending on your age, goals, physical activity, meal frequency and food choices.
However, it can be helpful to learn what the foods you consume are composed of. Some foods are mostly carbohydrate, or mostly protein, but MOST foods are a combination of the different macronutrients.
Regulating your eating habits by learning how to put together a complete and healthy meal and eating meals at regular times (rather than just snacking haphazardly throughout the day) should be among the first steps to upgrading your nutrition. You can't change what you don't know - so if you want to make changes without driving yourself crazy, start writing down what you eat, and when you eat, and evaluating your meal quality.
