Recovery: Why Sleep is SO Important!
While I LOVE workouts and they are super important for gaining strength and progressing your fitness goals - they are NOT where we actually MAKE changes to our bodies. The changes actually happen AFTER the workout, as we are RECOVERING from it! And if we don't recover well, we don't make as much progress!
Sleep is important for some many reasons, check out this extensive infographic for some more details and tips on how to get sleep but in general sleep is important for progress in the gym.
5 Signs your Sleep Habits Aren't Working for You:
Your mind is foggy
You get sick a lot
Your workouts feel too hard
You're unhappy
You struggle with your weight
Now, if you have a clinical sleep issue and you are doing your best, then it's okay! Our bodies are very adaptable and we can work through any issue and troubleshoot your struggles individually. This might mean temporarily decreasing your workout intensity, adding some other form of recovery or relaxation practice, or something else.
However, if it is within your control to get more sleep, I highly encourage you to make this an absolute priority in your health routine.
I myself, am a natural night owl...so to accommodate my 5am wake-up routine for work, I absolutely have to make the habit of getting to bed earlier than I want to. I definitely fall off my routine from time to time, but I make it a priority to get back on schedule as soon as I can, as I know I give my best coaching and make healthier choices when I am well- rested (in other words, I more easily make choices and actions that align with my values and beliefs!) wink wink!
